Doha 27th April 2014: Qatar Railways Company (Qatar Rail) has taken delivery of TBM S-865 (also known as Lebretha), the first of 21 tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for Doha Metro.

The machine was manufactured by German company Herrenknecht and is expected to start work in Q3 of 2014 at the Al Wahda site towards West Bay Central.  It will be used to bore through limestone for the Red Line North Underground project and will be able to dig through a distance of 7.954km.

The Red Line North Underground project extends over a distance of approximately 13 km northward from Mushaireb station, with the construction of 7 new underground stations. Specifically, two parallel tunnels will be excavated, for the two directions of travel, for a length of about 11.6 km and an internal diameter of 6.17 metres.

The main contractors for the project are Impregilo, SK Engineering Construction Co. and Galfar Al Misnad Engineering Contracting. The project is expected to be completed by first quarter of 2019.

The other three TBMs that will bore the required rail tunnels for the project are named Al Khor, Al Mayeda and Al Bidda.
