Qatar to hold First Red Bull Flugtag on November 1

Doha 15th September 2013: First Red Bull Flugtag is to land in Qatar on November 1. It will be held at the Museum of Islamic Art Park under the patronage of H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums Authority.

Red Bull Flugtag, means “flying day” in German. It is an event organized by Red Bull in which competitors try to fly homemade, human powered flying machines.

The first Red Bull Flugtag held in Vienna, Austria, in 1992. Then it has been held more than 100 times, around the world and visited 40 cities.

Qatar is the fourth country in the region to host the event. UAE, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are the other three countries in the region where the Flugtag has been held.

Arab inventor Abbas Ibn Firnas designed a flying machine composed of a structure and large wings in 19th century and attempted to fly.  He succeeded for a short distance.

A German team holds the current world record for the longest flying distance with a 69.79m flight.

Forty-six teams have been selected to take part in the Red Bull Flugtag in Qatar. All teams include a pilot and three crew members. The flying machine plus the pilot’s weight should not be greater180 kg. The air-crafts width should not be larger than eight metres.

The event will be oraganised in collaboration with Ford as one of the major sponsors, Innovations Unlimited ME, QMA and MIA as the hosts and Qatar TV as the official media partner.
