Doha 2nd November 2013: Thousands of people watched Qatar’s first Red Bull Flugtag event at the Museum of Islamic Art Park on Friday. Homemade flying machines entertained the crowd with their unique designs and colours.
The winners of the event were the team 3 Pilots and a Hairdresser, who scored a total of 270 points. French team Spirit of Paris came in second position with 220 points. The Equaliser won third place with 213 points.
The first place winners will receive a trip to Austria to the aircraft museum Hangar 7. Those who got the second prize will get a trip to Abu Dhabi to watch the Red Bull Air Race event, while the third prize winners will receive a trip to Dubai for a skydiving session.
In the event, teams are judged based on three criteria: flight distance, creativity of the craft, and showmanship. The judging panel of five members included Khalifa Saleh al Haroun, founder and CEO of local social media website iloveQatar.net, David Lewis, winner of Red Bull Dubai 2007′s creativity contest and Captain Richard Hatzel, chief ground instructor at Qatar Aeronautical College.
Thirty-five teams participated at the event, which was held under the patronage of HE Sheikha al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, chairperson of Qatar Museums Authority.
Qatari team Qatari Flyers performed a traditional ardha dance and ‘Sheikh’s Tent’ team wowed the crowd by performing the Harlem Shake and landed on fifth place.
Red Bull Flugtag, which means “flying day” in German was first held in Vienna, Austria, in 1992.
