Doha 24th January 2014: Doha Tram at Education City will be fully operational by 2016, according to a senior official.
The trial run of this country’s first and the Middle East’s most energy-efficient tram system will start in the beginning of 2016, said Qatar Foundation president Saad al-Muhannadi, while speaking to media on the sidelines of an event to mark the unveiling of a life-size mock-up of the Siemens Avenio trams.
The tram service aims to develop environmental friendly solutions for the transportation of around 60,000 people including students, staff and visitors within the Education City. It will help in reducing traffic and minimizing the usage of cars and emission.
Siemens officials explained the important features of the new Avenio trams at the event.
Siemens will provide 19 trams, each with three cars and can offer services up to a maximum of 239 passengers. The Avenio trams will run on 11.5km of track without overhead contact lines. The system will be installed across the Education City campus and will serve 25 stations and stops.
Dr Roland Busch, board member, Siemens AG and CEO of Siemens Infrastructure and Cities Sector, and several senior officials from QF, Siemens AG, Siemens WLL Qatar and Al Habtoor Leighton Group also attended the event.
