Presenting the Qatar Chronicle Awards for Extraordinary Achievement in Social Media

This special feature aims at exploring some of the trends in social media usage in the country & how it has forever changed the way various organizations interact with people.

While nominees for the previous categories were chosen from among the top social media pages in Qatar; the nominations for the Qatar Chronicle Readers Awards for Extraordinary Achievement in Social Media were sent in directly by readers from across the nation. At the onset, allow us to thank our dear readers for sending in their nominations.

We received a total of 51 entries  from readers for some of the most active social media pages in Qatar. Some of the entries were not included as the brand did not qualify for the category or had been already nominated for one of the awards announced earlier or because the country of origin was not Qatar. Given below are the final list of nominees sorted in the order in which we received the entries.

1) WeAreQatar @WeAreQatar

A total of 12 readers nominated @WeAreQatar for the Most Extraordinary Achievement in Social Media Award.  Qatar’s first rotation curation twitter account, @WeAreQatar is managed by a different curator every week. Curators are mostly Qatari residents from various backgrounds and each bring their own unique perspective into what life’s like in Qatar. The account presents a great potential for residents from different nationalities to be ambassadors of the country by representing the wider community and offers tourists and newcomers a valuable insight into the nation’s essence.

If this is about outstanding social media then my vote goes to I Love Qatar and their hard work. Those people never sleep and always respond to people when they need help

      i second that.

c’mon qatar vote for Mr. Q & ILQ.

    • Mike Button February 10, 2014 at 7:38 PM -

I second that. I’ve been in Qatar for 6 years and I feel that there would be no proper online scene if there was no ILQ. They got the ball rolling for everyone else. It’s just my humble opinion of course.

I may be a bit biased since I’ve met the young man behind the site and he genuinely cares about us expats.

I also am a contributor and donator to QAWS, however they’re a charitable cause and I’m not sure how they fit in with social media. I’ve liked their page dont get me wrong!!

QAWS is an amazing initiative. Doha is one of the most animal-friendly cities in the world thanks to them.

My life in Doha was sad and empty till the day I joined Doha Mums. That day onwards, the group brought so much joy into the lives of me and my little one and it has done the same for over a thousand families in Doha.

Doha Mums all the way…….. win win win

QAWS…. all the others will continue no matter what.

I arrived in Qatar not really an animal lover, though I would never see one harmed.

Having volunteered, saved (literally my wife was up every 2 hours feeding), fostered and eventually taking animals home from Qatar, the benefits of QAWS to Qatar are amazing.
This organisation, with no backing from the Government, has been in existence for 10 years.
Its not only the animals, the fund raising events, the social interaction at the farm… the kids loved this place. A safe environment for animals and families alike.

One of my animals was used a tennis ball – his voice box was damaged.
Without QAWS he probably would be in a landfill site now.

QAWS is a worth while cause. Looking out for animals without a voice.
