Doha, 25th February 2014: Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashgal) is all set to begin construction of the New Doha Zoo this year, with the much anticipated tourist attraction scheduled to be completed by 2017.
“The thematic design of the project is almost finished. We have issued contracts, enabling the demolition of the old zoo as we take the animals there to a safe place, pending the new facility’s completion”, stated Mr. Gregory Clarkson, Senior Planner of Ashgal during the Tourism in Tomorrow’s World Conference, held at the Renaissance Doha City Center Hotel.
The new Doha Zoo which would be seven times the size of the current facility would feature multiple attractions including an exclusive 7 star resort Tree House Hotel, a 5 star Rainforest Hotel as well as a 4 star Montaine Family Resort, in close proximity to the Villagio Mall.
The zoo would have the World’s first controlled biosphere roof system, which will cause it to rain within the zoo – once every hour along with maintaining a river ride through the zoo network.
The design of the zoo suggests the entire facility would be split into various zones, with each featuring a variety of animal attractions including lions, elephants, giraffes, gorillas, tigers and rhinos.
The park would include drive-through “African Safari”, “Asian Woodland” a mountain experience and a tropical “South American rainforest” environment. Planners are also working on a system that would allow visitors to take their own cars through the defined areas of the zoo.
Ashgal estimates that the zoo would attract 1.3 Million visitors by 2020. The zoo would also offer upto 2500 parking slots to Villagio mall goers. Visitors would be able to use the dedicated tram system to get to the zoo as well.
“We want to create a world-leading model for integrated nature conservation and visitor experience. It will be a unique and memorable attraction,”, commented Mr. Clarkson.
