New York: Women Together foundation gave its 2014 award to H E Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums Board of Trustees, for her cultural work and support for the promotion of art worldwide.
Sheikha Alia Ahmed bint Saif Al Thani, Qatar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, received the award on behalf of Sheikha Al Mayassa in a ceremony at the UN headquarters in New York.
Sheikha Alya expressed gratitude and appreciation of Sheikha Al Mayassa to the foundation’s committee for presenting her with this year’s award.
During a speech after receiving the award, Sheikha Alya said Sheikha Al Mayassa had set an example of how Arab women can assume leading positions and contribute significantly to the progress of their countries.
She said Sheikha Al Mayassa is a prominent figure encouraging arts and culture in Qatar and Islamic arts worldwide.
She also highlighted Sheikha Al Mayassa’s role in enhancing capacities of youth and women to enable them to become community leaders, referring to her chairpersonship of Reach Out to Asia.
Sheikha Alya also drew participants’ attention to Sheikha Al Mayassa’s role as a member of the World Heritage Committee through which she has sought to develop and promote museums, arts and heritage according to international standards.
