Head Butt Statue moved to Mathaf

Doha 29th October 2013: Qatar Museum Authority (QMA) has decided to move French football player Zinedine Zidane’s Head Butt statue from Corniche to Mathaf, the Museum of Modern Arab Art, near Education City.

16-foot bronze statue named “Coup de Tete” by Algerian artist Adel Abdessemed landed in Qatar earlier this month as the country prepares to host the 2022 World Cup. The sculpture was previously placed on the corniche near Al Mourjan restaurant.

The sculpture captures the moment when Zinedine Zidane infamously headbutting Italian player Marco Materazzi in the 2006 world cup final. France legend received a red card after the butting and was dismissed from match. He retired after the incident.

The statue drew criticism from various sides after its debut. Many of the Qataris said it is culturally not suitable and demanded its removal.

Adel Abdessemed’s exhibition ‘L’âge d’or’ is running at Mathaf until January 5, 2014. Coup de Tete will be there until the show lasts.
