Israel carries out air strike on Syria to destroy Hezbollah-bound missile shipment

Damascus 1st November 2013: Israel has carried out an air strike near the Syrian coastal city of Latakia to prevent missiles being transferred to the Lebanese militant group Hizbollah.

Latakia is a stronghold of Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president.

An explosion was first reported by Syrian activist groups.  A US official confirmed to AFP that there was an Israeli strike.

“Historically, targets have been missiles transferred to Hezbollah,” allied with Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, the official said.

 Israeli officials refused to comment.

The Israelis is widely reported to have carried out several raids over Syria, since the uprising against the regime of Syrian President started. The last alleged Israeli air strike in Syria was in early July. Israeli jets fired long-range missiles at a Syrian military base north of Latakia on July.  A major attack north of Damascus sent up fireballs that were seen all over the capital in May this year.
