Doha 11th December 2013: US Secretary of Defence Chuck Hagel reaffirmed US military ties with Qatar on Tuesday.
Hagel met with the Qatari emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, and Defense Minister Hamad bin Ali al-Attiyah yesterday during a regional tour aimed at boosting Gulf alliances amid disagreements over Washington’s policy on Iran and Syria.
Hagel’s six-day tour to the region aimed to emphasize the depth of the U.S. commitment to security and stability in the Gulf.
Mr. Hagel and Mr. Attiyah signed a 10-year Defense Cooperation Agreement that oversees interaction between US and Qatari forces.
The agreement also allows continued assignment of American troops to installations in the area, including the Combined Air Operations Center at Al Udeid Air Base.
