More than 1,000 sick in Japan after eating pesticide contaminated food

Tokyo 09th January 2014: Hundreds of people have fallen sick across Japan after eating frozen food that may have been contaminated with a pesticide, according to reports.

The latest reports say that the number of people affected has risen to more than 1,000.

People have reported vomiting, stomach pain and other symptoms of food poisoning after having the food products including pizza and lasagne manufactured by Maruha Nichiro Holdings.

The company yesterday apologized and warned people not to eat any of the contaminated food, including pizza, croquettes and pancakes made at a factory in Gunma Prefecture, north of Tokyo.

The company started recalling 6.4 million packages of different frozen foods items last month, saying it found some were contaminated by high levels of malathion.

Malathion is a pesticide used in farming and gardening, and to kill fleas on animals and people. It may cause death at high enough concentrations.

The frozen food products made by the Japanese company were contaminated with the pesticides up to 2.6 million times the allowable limit.

According to the company, none of the products in question had been exported outside Japan.
